     Message from the President

Distinguish colleagues, fellow pathologists and dear friends

It is with humility and a deep sense of responsibility that I take on the office of President of the College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka for the year 2026. I am sincerely thankful for the trust placed in me to lead this esteemed body of professionals who are united in their commitment to advancing the science and practice of pathology and to enhancing the quality of patient care in our nation.

The College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka has long stood as a pillar of academic excellence, professional integrity and service to the nation. Our specialty forms the very foundation of modern medicine. Every diagnosis we render, every report we sign out, and every consultation we provide directly influences patient care, clinical decision-making, and public health outcomes. Though often working behind the scenes, our contribution is central and indispensable.

Our College continues to play a pivotal role in advancing the standards of pathology practice, education, and research in our country. Through your dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence, we have been able to contribute meaningfully to patient care and the strengthening of the healthcare system in Sri Lanka. I sincerely appreciate the invaluable service rendered by our members in often challenging circumstances. Your resilience and continued pursuit of academic and professional growth reflect the true spirit of our profession.

Continuing the momentum built over five decades we will implement targeted initiatives in 2026 to deepen our impact and fulfill our mission. As we move forward into 2026, our focus must remain clear and purposeful.

We will continue to strengthen academic excellence. Continuous professional development, subspecialty advancement, and structured educational activities for both consultants and postgraduate trainees will remain a priority. We aim to expand high-quality workshops, webinars, and multidisciplinary academic forums that foster both knowledge and collaboration. A major highlight for this year will be our 10th International Conference of the Sri-Lankan British School of Pathology in collaboration with the International Study Group of Gastrointestinal Pathology. This prestigious event will bring together leading experts from around the globe to share the latest advancements in gastrointestinal pathology.

We must embrace innovation and technological advancement. Digital pathology, artificial intelligence, molecular diagnostics, and precision medicine are transforming practice. We will support awareness, training, and responsible integration of these tools while upholding ethical standards.

We will reinforce quality assurance and professional standards. Standardization of reporting, participation in external quality assessment, and updated national guidelines will ensure excellence. Patient safety and diagnostic accuracy will remain at the heart of our mission.

Furthermore, we will nurture the next generation of pathologists. Our trainees are the future custodians of this profession. Mentorship, research opportunities, and leadership development will be strengthened to empower them with confidence and competence.

Collaboration will be a key theme this year collaboration with clinical colleagues; and collaboration with regional and international professional bodies. By strengthening partnerships, we broaden our academic reach and elevate our standards.

We also recognize the increasing demands placed upon pathologists-rising workloads, resource limitations, and expanding expectations. As a College, we will advocate constructively for improved infrastructure, workforce planning, and professional wellbeing. Supporting our members is not optional-it is essential.

The accuracy and reliability of histopathological reporting rely greatly on the dedicated support of our technical staff. While services have improved in major hospitals with the inclusion of medical laboratory scientists, significant gaps remain in peripheral institutions. To address this, we plan to conduct targeted workshops to enhance technical skills and competence, alongside formally recognizing long-serving staff in appreciation of their invaluable contributions.

Additionally, we will continue programs to raise public awareness about cancer prevention and implement a structured archival system to preserve the college’s knowledge and legacy.

Above all, behind every slide, specimen, and laboratory value is a patient, a life, a family. Our work, though technical, carries profound human significance. Precision, compassion, and responsibility must guide all that we do.

I invite all members to actively engage in the college’s activities, share ideas, and collaborate to strengthen our collective impact. Together, we can uphold the highest standards of pathology, inspire the next generation, and serve our nation with excellence.

On behalf of the council, I thank you for your dedication and support. With your wisdom and collective strength, 2026 will be a year of meaningful progress for our college and for pathology in Sri Lanka.

Thank you

Sincerely,

Dr. Mangala Bopagoda
President of the College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka, 2026
