Celebrating 50 Years: Path Master Quiz Fosters Excellence in Pathology

The final round of the Path Master Quiz was held on 3rd September 2025 at the
Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. This inaugural inter-university
pathology quiz was a major highlight of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the
College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka. The first round, an online competition
with participation from all twelve university medical faculties across Sri
Lanka, was on 29th July 2025, culminating three universities selected to the
final round.

The quiz brought together teams from twelve universities across Sri Lanka,
including the University of Kelaniya, University of Moratuwa, University of
Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna, University of Jaffna, University of Sri
Jayewardenepura, University of Colombo, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka,
Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, and Wayamba University of Sri Lanka,
Eastern University of Sri Lanka and General Sir John Kotelawala University.
After competitive rounds, the teams from the Faculty of Medicine, University of
Colombo, the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and
the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya were announced as the finalists
to advance to the Grand Finale.
At the grant finale, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo was crowned
champions, while the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri
Jayewardenepura and the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya were awarded
first runners-up and second runners-up, respectively.
The other highlights of the event include a guest lecture delivered by
Professor Janaki Hewavisenthi, Cadre Chair and Senior Professor of Pathology,
University of Kelaniya, on the topic History of Pathology: From Papyrus to
Precision Medicine at the final round and a talk on career guidance, to insight
and interest in the field of pathology delivered by Dr. Cherine Sosai, Vice
President of the College, at the first round.
The final round was concluded with the presentation of certificates and
prizes to the winning teams, attended by President of the College Professor
Priyani Amarathunga and Past Presidents Professor Chandu de Silva, Professor
Janaki Hewavisenthi and Dr. Mala Tudawe, celebrating their outstanding
achievements. The University of Colombo team was invited to the Inauguration
Ceremony of the 50th Anniversary International Conference of the College.
The organizing committee was led by the Chief Coordinator Professor Gayana
Mahendra. Quiz Masters were Dr. Roshitha de Silva and Dr Janidu Karunaratne in
each round. Organizing committee members included Dr Cherine Sosai, Professor
Dulani Beneragama, Dr Samalai Kanagasabapathy, Dr Niluka Ranatunga, Dr Lalani De
Silva, and Professor Hemali Gunasekera. Professors Janaki Hewavisenthi, Lakmini
Mudduwa, Roshitha Waduge, and Sulochana Wijethunga served in the expet panel,
meticulously selecting the questions for the competition.
A wider audience including medical students from the respective faculties,
university academics, past presidents and the members of the College
participated in the final round.
The Path Master Quiz 2025 provided an excellent platform for medical students to
demonstrate their knowledge and skills, reflecting the ongoing commitment to
excellence in pathology education in Sri Lanka.
