College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka Celebrates Anniversary with Public Health Focus

The College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka (CPSL) recently held a media briefing in Colombo to mark its 50th Anniversary and to raise public awareness about cancer. Held in collaboration with the Health Promotion Bureau, the event on July 9, 2025, highlighted the critical role of pathologists in cancer diagnosis and care, emphasizing that early detection is key to improving patient outcomes.

The briefing featured several experts, including CPSL President Prof. Priyani Amarathunga, who detailed the College's half-century journey and achievements in pathology services across the country. Dr. Suraj Perera, Director of the National Cancer Control Programme, addressed the rising burden of cancer in Sri Lanka, stressing the importance of accurate and timely diagnosis. Patient stories were shared to illustrate how detailed pathology reports directly influence treatment decisions, from complex tumour cases to guiding therapy in breast cancer patients by Prof. Dulani Beneragama, Dr. Dayal Gamlaksha and Dr. Avanthi Rajapaksha.

The event, which was live-streamed and received significant coverage from major television and print media, also featured a Tamil-language briefing by Dr. Cherine Sosai to ensure inclusivity.

Dr. Lalani De Silva briefed on the CPSL's ongoing 50th anniversary celebrations include a series of public awareness initiatives, such as a video competition and a cancer awareness program, all aimed at educating the public on cancer prevention and the vital role of pathology.
