Cytopathology Workshop Successfully Conducted

The College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka successfully conducted the Cytopathology Workshop on 7 August 2026 at the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna, in collaboration with the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna. The workshop was focused on air-dried cytology smears and the Leishman staining technique in diagnostic cytopathology, providing participants with valuable practical knowledge and hands-on experience. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Priya Amaraweera, followed by an introduction to the workshop by Dr. Mangala Bopagoda, President of the College of Pathologists of Sri Lanka.

The academic sessions were led by Prof. Lakmini Mudduwa, who introduced the principles of air-dried, Leishman-stained cytology smears, while Prof. Thusharie Liyanage delivered comprehensive lectures on the interpretation of thyroid, breast, and miscellaneous cytology specimens

Participants actively engaged in practical sessions, reviewing Leishman-stained cytology cases and observing live demonstrations of the Leishman staining technique. The workshop concluded with an interactive case discussion conducted by Dr. V. A. D. N. Samarawickrama, enabling participants to apply their knowledge through case-based learning.

The workshop was attended by 50 participants including consultant histopathologists and postgraduate trainees from across the country. It provided an excellent opportunity to enhance diagnostic skills in cytopathology through expert-led lectures, practical demonstrations, and interactive discussions. The programme also provided participants with certificates of attendance, along with MOH-accredited CPD points upon successful completion of the programme.
